Vandal cheer raises funds to compete

McCall-Donnelly cheerleaders will tackle their first-ever competition on Saturday in Nampa, but the work started long before.Vandal coach Julie Carroll said her squad has been excited for a first-ever full season of cheer competitions, but was in need of a nine-panel floor mat system to practice and perform safely.

Vandals bounce 4A Caldwell

Foul trouble sidelined Sam Penny for stretches during Saturday’s game versus Caldwell, so the McCall-Donnelly junior made the most of his minutes.Penny wound up scoring 23 points in just 23 minutes to lead three Vandals in double figures as the M-D boys basketball team bounced the 4A Cougars, 67-61, in a non-conference game played in Caldwell.Luke Scott added 19 points as the Vandals knocked off 4A Caldwell for a second straight season.

Rushton’s in control at Calhoun

Adam Rushton bumped up weight and still picked up an impressive win over a 5A opponent as the McCall-Donnelly wrestling team competed at the Calhoun Classic in Nyssa, Oregon on Friday and Saturday.The Vandal senior was joined by his sister, Zion Rushton, in winning a tournament title at the multi-class meet, which classified wrestlers by weight divisions used in Oregon.That meant the elder Rushton, who normally competes at 182 pounds, was forced to wrestle up to 190 at Calhoun.

Vandals win league opener

Izzy Tinney got the home crowd fired up early by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and the McCall-Donnelly girls basketball team opened Snake River Valley Conference play by knocking off Weiser, 53-37, last week at the M-D gym.Tinney finished the game with a team-high 17 points while another sophomore, Emma Ormsby, showed off some of her immense potential by collecting 10 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double performance.

McCall dominates Sun Valley ice

Charlie Reeder and Colt Value both scored twice as the McCall Vandals high school hockey team snared a tournament championship with a 5-2 win over Jackson Hole on Sunday.Carson McMindes also scored the puck during the title game, which was held at Hailey’s Campion Ice House.

Ramblers slip versus Ontario

Claire Pierce scored 10 points and Lacey Mack added nine points but the Cascade girls basketball team came up short against Ontario (Oregon), 35-28, during a game played last week at Novotny Gym.Allyson Bailey also added four points for the Ramblers, unlocking her first buckets of the season.

Cascade coasts behind Thurston’s 25

Some shooters are sharper than others, and Tyler Thurston proved that again by scoring 25 points in 23 minutes as the Cascade boys basketball team cruised past North Star Charter of Eagle, 64-38, to open the season.Cole Olson added 16 points and the Ramblers jumped out to an early lead against the visiting Huskies and never looked back in a game played at Novotny Gym.“Our guys looked good in quite a few areas on Thursday,” Cascade coach Josh Hurley said.

Luke Scott scored 18 points and Sam Penny threw down a dunk as the McCall-Donnelly boys basketball team opened the season Friday with an emphatic victory over Orofino in front of a home crowd.It might have been fitting if the final score, 58-30, included an exclamation point at the end.“This was a statement game for us,” junior post Michael Foster said.

Thurston, Foster make ‘to watch’ list

Two boys basketball players from Valley County recently made a “Players to Watch” list for the 2023-24 season.Cascade’s Tyler Thurston and McCall-Donnelly’s Michael Foster were both included among a grouping of top players to pay attention to this winter in a list compiled by the Idaho Statesman.This is Thurston’s second straight year earning preseason recognition from the Boise-based newspaper.

Rushton, Roberts nab tournament titles

Zion Rushton started her sophomore campaign off with a bang, repeating as champion as the McCall-Donnelly wrestling team competed at the Dick Griswold Memorial Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Potlatch.Ethan Roberts joined Rushton atop the podium at the multi-class meet, reaching the finals in the 170-pound division and pinning his opponent in under a minute.Finn Moon gave the Vandals yet another wrestler who advanced to the championship round, bringing home second place at 285 pounds.Bud Stonebraker (160) and John Spilotros (152) both earned bronze.
