Cascade shines on local links

Viktoria Stepanishena tied for medalist honors and both the Rambler boys and girls won team titles, tangible evidence the inaugural Cascade Invitational golf tournament last week was a resounding success for the host.But it almost did not take place thanks to a familiar culprit this time of year – the weather.“We thought the tournament might not happen after waking up to 2-3 inches of snow Wednesday,” Rambler golf coach Kerie Kushlan said.

Cramblet second as Vandals earn return

Ellie Cramblet snared second place and the McCall-Donnelly girls golf team seized a spot at state with a strong showing at the 3A District III Golf Championships, held Monday in Eagle.The Vandal girls have now qualified for state as a team three years running.Keaton Swift and Trevor Jue will also join the M-D contingent at the 3A Golf State Championships, set for Monday and Tuesday in Rathdrum, after turning in top individual rounds.Cramblet shot a 91 over 18 holes at the host site, Eagle Hills Golf Course, to claim a second straight top five individual finish at districts.

Olson punches state return

Cole Olson will again represent the Ramblers at state this season after placing fourth overall as the Cascade golf team competed at the 2A District III Championships on Monday in Mountain Home.Olson, a junior, shot an 81 through 18 holes at Desert Canyon Golf Course, good enough for the fourth best round out of more than 50 golfers from the 11 schools that attended.

Mountaineers sharpen for districts

Meadows Valley track and field athletes gathered for one more opportunity to sharpen their skills before districts, this time competing at the Lynn Behrman Invitational on Friday in Parma.Natalie Ruth provided one of the Mountaineer highlights while running the 400-meters, crossing the finish line in 1 minute, 8.15 seconds.

Local athletes soar at Mile High

Local track and field athletes delivered through cold, wind, snow – even hail – as several schools descended upon the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex on Tuesday for the Mile High Invitational.The whacky weather also did not stop vehicles from cramming the venue parking lot, around Payette Lakes Middle School and down the street as parents, students and fans gathered to watch athletes from McCall-Donnelly, Cascade and Meadows Valley compete close to home for the first and only time this spring.M-D, the only 3A team in attendance, dominated the medal count among the eight schools that made the trip to McCall, racking up 22 individual golds and four more wins in the relays.

Cramblet runner up by a stroke

Ellie Cramblet came through for a second place finish as the McCall-Donnelly golf team tackled Scotch Pines Golf Course last week.Cramblet, a senior, shot a 95 over 18 holes to lead the Vandal girls on the Payette links, turning in some of her best rounds this season.The M-D golfer finished just one stroke behind winner Lucy Hickey of Weiser, who has earned medalist honors at multiple outings this spring.The girls team was at less than full strength for the Scotch Pines outing, with three players missing the April 23 outing due to testing at school.The Vandal boys were also able to nab a third place finish at the tournament, placing behind just Snake River Valley Conference opponents Homedale and Fruitland.Trevor Jue and Gus Dyson led the M-D boys over 18 holes, both golfers shooting an 86.Vandal coach BJ Sorensen said golfers enjoyed nice weather and a course in great condition.Cramblet’s performance matched her best result, at least on the leaderboard, so far this season.

Teams ready for districts

Several local high school teams are gearing up for postseason action, which includes 3A District III Tournament openers on Saturday for both the McCall-Donnelly baseball and softball teams.Vandal golfers will also tee off for their own district tournament on Monday when they take on 18 holes at Eagle Hills Golf Course in Eagle.

Athletes tackle Homedale, New Plymouth meets

Vandal athletes collected eight golds as the McCall-Donnelly boys track and field snared another overall team win while competing at the Amy Christofferson Invitational on Friday in Homedale.George Speirs, Matthew Daniels, Van Vinson, Jacob Mascheroni, Seth Weller and Elise Johnson all won individual events at the multi-class meet, which featured athletes from 15 schools, including most of the Snake River Valley Conference.Speirs was able to grab wins in the 800- and 1,600-meter races, then collected a third gold in the boys sprint medley relay, where he teamed up with fellow seniors Caleb Beaman, Daniels and Vinson to top the field with a time of 3 minutes, 52.36 seconds.Daniels picked up an individual victory in the 400 while Mascheroni, a freshman, represented the M-D boys in the 3,200 and earned his first individual victory this season.Vinson also nabbed another win in the pole vault, topping 14 feet, while Seth Weller earned a repeat victory in the javelin with a personal best throw of 136 feet, 3.5 inches.

M-D rally falls short

The McCall-Donnelly softball team staged an epic rally in extra innings last week versus Weiser, but came up a run short, 8-7, during a Snake River Valley Conference game played at the M-D softball field.Angie Dauphinais collected two hits to lead the Vandals while Ceder Saxton, Makenzie Pedrow Monique Brewer and Payton Woolcott also each put the ball in play and reached base.Saxton and Bella Potts each notched a pair of RBI while Pedrow also drove in a run.Senior pitcher Angie Dauphinais held it down for all eight innings, striking out three while allowing 10 hits.“The Weiser game did not end like we wanted,” M-D coach Jeff Walker said.
