Riders tackle NW Cup downhill

Hundreds of mountain bikers from all over the West descended upon Tamarack Resort over the weekend for the NW Cup downhill races.Among a sea of competitive riders who visited Donnelly, a couple of McCall siblings, Joey and Alaina Guliuzza, gave the large-scale event some local flare.

McCall teams treat fans at tournament

Local teams treated fans to a handful of victories as the West Central Idaho Youth Baseball Club hosted its first-ever tournament in McCall last weekend.The McCall Mountaineers 12-and-under team led the way by winning four of seven games during the three-day gathering, which featured teams from surrounding Idaho and even Oregon.The McCall Moose Babe Ruth team opened play among the Babe Ruth ranks (age 13-15) on Friday, but were dismissed 13-6 by Grangeville.

Locals endure during 9 to 5 race

Yadi and Payette Spangenberg shared a fun moment Saturday when the mother and daughter combined to win the 9 to 5 at Jug Mountain Ranch, a cross country mountain bike challenge put on by Twisted Turtle Racing.The Spangenberg duo, 46 and 15 years old, picked up the victory in the two-person women’s division, taking turns circling a 8.3-mile loop a total of nine times in 7 hours, 33 minutes, 13 seconds to reach the top of the podium.Saturday’s event asked riders to complete as many trips around the loop as possible from 9 a.m.

Donnelly duo to represent Idaho at nationals

A pair of students who attend Payette Lakes Middle School will compete on one of rodeo’s bigger stages next week.Colt Crockett and Ember Swain, both of Donnelly, each recently earned positions on the Idaho National Junior High Rodeo Team.The local duo will now travel with their Idaho teammates to compete in the 19th Annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR), which runs Sunday through the following Saturday and takes place in Des Moines, Iowa.It is the first time at nationals for both Crockett and Swain.Swain, riding her horse Trixie, qualified for the Idaho team after posting a time of 20.8 seconds in the pole bending event to become a reserve champion at the Idaho State Finals earlier this spring.
