Officials are monitoring air quality as high school athletes start practice this week to prepare for the fall season.A series of wildfires have filled Valley County skies with smoke and diminished the air quality in recent weeks, and even forced organizers of a popular mountain bike race to be held at Tamarack Resort in Donnelly over the weekend to call off the event.But McCall-Donnelly Activities Director Conor Kennedy said school officials are on top of it.
Add Hall of Famer to the long list of achievements for Cascade’s Bill Platts.The local 96-year-old track and field world record-holder was inducted into the Idaho Senior Games Hall of Fame at a ceremony last week.Platts received a custom glass trophy of recognition, with his name engraved.
Poor air quality from nearby wildfires prompted organizers of a high-profile mountain bike series, slated to be held at Tamarack Resort over the weekend, to call off the event.The 2024 TRP Big Mountain Enduro, billed as the premier Enduro tour in North America, was expected to bring in both professional and amateur talent to the Donnelly-based resort, which has hosted multiple mountain bike races already this summer.But race organizers nixed the event just days prior following a meeting where air quality was discussed.“It’s a shame we didn’t get to have it,” Big Mountain Enduro’s Dillon Suarez said.
High school athletes from McCall-Donnelly, Cascade and Meadows Valley got back to work this week as fall practices started Monday.Programs like Vandal volleyball jumped right in, holding three days of tryouts and practicing twice per day while also doing fun activities with other fall M-D athletic teams.Official games start as early as Aug.

When high school athletics rev back up with Monday practices it will come with a slight twist – at least in appearance. The Idaho High School Activities Association voted to modify competition classifications going forward, meaning McCall-Donnelly will technically bump up from 3A to 4A for the 2024-25 school year.
Season passes to the McCall Golf Course will increase 5% for the 2025 season, under a rate increase recently approved by the McCall City Council.The increase approved by council members will also raise tournament fees and increase daily round rates by as much as 20%.“The long-term sustainability of our golf club is the driving force behind our fee increases for this year,” McCall Golf Course Professional David DiMartino said.The rate hike will raise the cost of season passes for unlimited play from $920.62 to $1,015.The course will also offer a season pass for unlimited play after 4 p.m.
Not much can jolt Tom Anderson after nearly four decades of helping put on the Fosdick Benefit Golf Fundraiser, which was held over the weekend in New Meadows.Until recently, when a local donor approached him with a pledge of $25,000 toward the Fosdick cause.“That was just amazing,” Anderson said.
