Will Huckaby snared a top 20 finish as the Cascade cross country team opened the season last week at the Middleton Soggy Sneaker Run.Huckaby tackled the 5,000-meter course at Middleton High School in 20 minutes, 58.53 seconds, placing 20th while running against the varsity boys.Roby Kirby, Kysar Ellsworth and Lincoln Huckaby also competed for the Rambler boys at the multi-class meet, which featured runners from 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools.Rachel Hegerhorst represented the Cascade girls in Middleton, crossing the finish line in 27:45 while running in the varsity girls division.Sawyer Davis also placed 16th while competing in the junior high girls race, which featured a 3,000-meter course.Coach Josh Miller said Rambler runners netted three personal records at the meet.“We are looking forward to continuing to improve over the remainder of the season,” Miller said.Cascade runners next compete on Sept.

Eitel & Cromwell take first at Magic Mountain

Freshman Willa Cromwell placed first in the junior varsity race with sixth grader Svea Eitel also topping the podium as the McCall Area Composite Mountain Bike team took to the race course in their second race of the season.There were 664 total mountain bike racers at the race, held at Magic Mountain near Kimberly on Saturday.The McCall team notched 17 podium finishes, including a long-anticipated fifth place finish from Freshman Nelson Witte.“Nelson has finished 6th a number of times last year, but never made it onto the podium,” said Team Director Dean Cromwell.“He was super excited about it and we were too,” Cromwell said.Freshman girls Rebecca Nemec, Casey Haynes and Teya Martinez finished in an impressive sweep of second, third and fourth.Course conditions at Magic Mountain were affected by the area’s lack of rain this summer.“It was definitely dusty and the course was super loose.

The McCall-Donnelly football team was picked to finish third in the Snake River Valley Conference, according to a poll of league coaches.The 2024 Preseason Coaches Polls, published online at idahosports.com, has the Vandals slotted third among conference opponents.M-D is actually tied with Fruitland for third, both receiving an equal amount of votes.

Monahan dagger sinks Lewiston

Bogdan Monahan delivered a dagger to give the McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team a 1-0 victory over Lewiston in its season opener over the weekend.The Vandals also traveled to Parma on Monday, returning home with a 1-1 draw to begin the young season 1-0-1.M-D coach Forrest Stanley called it a good start to the year.“Two quality opponents that tested our defense and control at the midfield,” the head coach said.

M-D blanks Grangeville in opener

Five different players hitting the net during a 5-0 victory is just the kind of thing that makes a veteran coach smile.That is exactly what the McCall-Donnelly girls soccer team did during their season opener on Saturday, blanking Grangeville during a non-conference game played on the Bulldogs field.Val Sofaly, Camas Backus, Elise Johnson, Zion Rushton and Grace Whitescarver all scored goals as the Vandals downed their northern rivals with a strong effort.“We were solid,” M-D coach Mike Maini said.

Former assistant to lead Cascade netters

A former assistant coach will take the reins of the Cascade volleyball program this fall, starting with a tournament this weekend in New Plymouth.Alison Haupt, 34, was on the Rambler staff the last few seasons and will replace former head coach Tessa Redmon, who departed after three years at the helm.Haupt played volleyball through high school while growing up on the central coast of California.She fell in love with the sport, and has spent the last five years as an assistant coach, including two seasons guiding the Cascade junior varsity.Now it is her turn.
