M-D runners take on Timberlake

Charlie Speirs delivered another spirited run as the McCall-Donnelly cross country team competed at the Timberlake Farragut Invitational on Saturday, earning a top 15 finish among a field of more than 200 runners.Speirs, a sophomore, ended up placing 13th after completing the 5,000-meter course at Farragut State Park, located near Coeur D’Alene, in 16 minutes, 25.86 seconds.Teammate Jacob Mascheroni also finished 27th with a time of 17:01.03, giving the Vandals two runners inside the top 30.M-D coach McCall Keller entered the season with high expectations for the duo.“Charlie exceeded expectations again and is proving to be a very good competitor for the state title,” Keller said.

Vandals beat Trojans at home

Peyton Esplin and Colt Value combined for more than 200 yards rushing as the McCall-Donnelly football team ground out a 24-7 victory over Nampa Christian on Friday at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex.Value, Maddox Arnold and Mikey Wyman scored touchdowns and the Vandal defense delivered a dominant effort to send their former 2A rivals back to Nampa with a loss.M-D moved to 2-0 with the victory on its home field, and players celebrated with friends and family afterward.

Spangenberg completes comeback to lead McCall MTB

Payette Spangenberg started the varsity mountain bike race by crashing and losing her bike chain, but finished in first place after overtaking the entire field.Cyclists in the McCall Area Composite Mountain Bike Team landed 21 podium places, including five first place finishes at the third race of the Interscholastic Cycling League season.The race was held at Grand Targhee Resort near Alta, Wyoming on Saturday with 717 middle school and high school athletes participating.Spangenberg crashed hard while battling for a slot at the front of the pack coming into the first singletrack section, which was too tight to allow any passing, said Team Director Dean Cromwell.“She immediately got back up, took a minute to put her chain back on, and found herself in last place,” Cromwell said.

M-D edges Emmett on Carheden goal

Sebastian Carheden made his first goal this season an exceptional one, helping the McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team edge Emmett, 1-0, during a Snake River Valley Conference game played last week on the road.Carheden, a sophomore, beat the Huskies goalkeeper with a finish deep into the second half, giving the Vandals a third one-score victory in five games.M-D also traveled to Nampa on Saturday, but were turned away 3-0 to drop its first game this season.Despite the loss, Vandal coach Forrest Stanley said his squad is improving.

Ramblers restock for football

The Cascade football team enters the 2024 season ready and restocked, nearly doubling its number of players from last year.The Ramblers took the field last year with just 12 players – enough to field an 8-man lineup the Long Pin Conference requires with a handful of subs.But Cascade coach Keala Hoe said 21 athletes came out for the program this fall, meaning the sideline just got more crowded.

M-D blanks Grangeville in opener

Lexi Arnold delivered 11 kills in her new outside hitter position and the McCall-Donnelly volleyball team opened the season last week by sweeping Grangeville, 28-26, 25-17, 25-16, at the M-D gym. Geneveive Kertz also collected six kills and four blocks as the Vandals knocked off their longtime rivals in front of a home crowd that was clearly feeling it.
