Cascade roundup: volleyball, cross country

Lynn Ellsworth came off the bench and gave the Cascade volleyball team a spark, but the team ultimately fell to Council, 25-9, 25-12, 25-11, during a Long Pin Conference match played last week on the road.Ellsworth, a sophomore, was called on to fill the middle of the Rambler lineup when senior starter Claire Pierce suffered an injury during the second set.Pierce was unable to finish the game, so Ellsworth stepped in despite never playing the position before.

M-D gets right against Grangeville

The McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team capped off a challenging week of games by rolling past Grangeville, 6-0, during a non-conference tilt played Saturday at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex.It was a get-right performance – following a tie and a loss to Snake River Valley Conference opponents in days prior – and featured regular starting goalkeeper Michael Foster playing another position during the second half and finding the net to the delight of those in attendance.Caleb Anderson scored a pair of goals to lead M-D on Saturday while Sebastian Carheden, Jose Manuel and Bogdan Monahan also finished chances.Vandal coach Forrest Stanley deemed the performance a good one, and noted his players regularly strung passes together.The days leading up to Saturday proved challenging.

Vandals close out Chargers in three

It took a village as the McCall-Donnelly volleyball team closed out Cole Valley in three sets, 25-19, 25-9, 25-23, last week in Meridian to stay undefeated on the season.Lexi Arnold, Genevieve Kertz and Shilah Arnold combined for 27 kills during the Snake River Valley Conference game, helping the Vandals run their record to 15-0-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.“We were expecting the Cole Valley game to be super tough and our players rose to the occasion,” M-D coach Amber Green said.Kertz came through with some late heroics – five blocks and four kills – as the Vandals rallied from a 18-12 deficit to pull out a third set victory and shut the door on a feisty Chargers side.M-D gathered 10 total blocks during the match while Bisbee Henderson delivered a team-high 22 digs and fueled a strong defensive effort with her communication.“She really directs traffic on the court, which helps everyone,” Green said.The Vandals spread the wealth among their hitters, with Lexi Arnold leading the way with 11 kills.

Spangenberg scoring spurs streak

Zoe Spangenberg scored a three-goal hat trick in singular fashion as the McCall-Donnelly girls soccer team continued an unbeaten campaign with a 7-1 victory over Parma last week on the road.Addison DeFoort, Maddie Lathrop, Payton Woolcott and Kelsey O’Brien also found the net during the Snake River Valley Conference game played in Parma.A fun fact emerged from the outing.

The Payette Lakes Middle School cross country girls team snared first place at the Parma Invitational last week in Parma.Teagan Mascheroni nabbed third place overall and Faith Sapp (fifth), Talia Herman (seventh) and Isabel Summerfield (eighth) gave the Vikings four runners inside the top 10.Grayson Shultz led the PLMS boys with a top 20 finish, placing 16th.Most Viking runners put up personal best times while tackling the 3,000-meter course at Parma High School.

M-D back on track with wins

Toby Klasner sent a message in the first minute as the McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team downed Payette, 3-0, during a Snake River Valley Conference game played last week at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex.Three different players snapped the net with goals – Klasner, Bogdan Monahan and Jose Manuel – as the Vandals responded to their first loss of the season by stringing together a pair of wins, also defeating Meridian’s Ambrose School, 4-1, earlier in the week.The M-D trio also combined during the first minute while squaring off against the Pirates, piecing together a passing sequence capped off by Klasner finding the net for a 1-0 advantage.Monahan converted a penalty kick in the 14th minute, then set Manuel up for a third score – a one-touch re-direct – just before halftime, giving the Vandals a 3-0 lead at the midpoint break.“The first goal set the tone of the game,” M-D coach Forrest Stanley said.Goalkeeper Michael Foster came up with three saves to earn the shutout, his fourth this season.With the pair of wins, the Vandals sat atop league standings, sporting a 5-1-1 record overall.

Vandal VB caps busy week with title

Shilah Arnold delivered 12 kills and the McCall-Donnelly volleyball team snared a tournament title at the Idaho Classic, played at Meridian’s Mountain View High School on Friday and Saturday.Genevieve Kertz added five kills and three blocks as the Vandals knocked off Ambrose School in the championship match, 25-10, 25-19.It was the conclusion of a busy week that saw the M-D netters tackle nine matches in five days.
