The McCall Vandals hockey team opened the season over the weekend on the road, going 1-3 through four games.The Vandals blanked Boise, 8-0, but lost a trio of games against Timberline (4-1), Eagle/Rocky (6-2) and Idaho Falls (9-1).The McCall team is technically not affiliated with McCall-Donnelly, but competes among the high school ranks as the McCall Vandals and are sponsored by the McCall Youth Hockey Association.

Speirs, Mascheroni lead Vandal runners at state

Teammates Charlie Speirs and Jacob Mascheroni proved it on the biggest stage over the weekend, both finishing among the top boys runners as McCall-Donnelly competed at the 2024 Idaho Cross Country State Championships on Saturday in Eagle.Josie Leslie also shined during her first state meet at the 4A level, helping the Vandal girls to a fifth place finish.The M-D boys, meanwhile, brought home a fourth place trophy, forcing a repeat of last year when both Vandal boys and girls finished among the top five.Speirs capped off a successful fall season by becoming a state runner-up in just his sophomore season.

Huckaby concludes season with state run

Will Huckaby represented the Cascade cross country team at the 2A State Championships on Saturday in Eagle to conclude a strong sophomore season.The Rambler runner completed the 5,000-meter course at Eagle Island State Park in 20:09.45, a mark that shaved over a minute and half off his time since the season began.“This was the culmination of months of hard work, hundreds of miles, hours upon hours of running,” Cascade coach Josh Miller said.On Saturday, there was an additional challenge.

Fruitland frustration: Vandals fall, but prepare for playoffs

Quarterback Maddox Arnold completed 17 of 21 passes as the McCall-Donnelly football team hosted Fruitland on Friday under the lights at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex.Receiver Easton Allen also caught a long touchdown for the Vandals during the Snake River Valley Conference tilt.But the Grizzlies defense held M-D rushers to just 56 yards and the visiting team pulled out a 23-14 victory with a punishing ground game of its own.With a 5-3 record, the Vandals still advanced to the 4A State Playoffs, with a trip to Blackfoot on tap for a Saturday game against Snake River.

Vandals storm state opener, finish fourth

Toby Klasner hit the net with a pair of goals as the McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team stormed the 4A State Tournament with a 4-1 win over Sun Valley Community School last week in Post Falls.The opening day victory put the Vandals on path to bring home a fourth place trophy from the state gathering, a finish that matched last year’s performance and gave the program significant hardware in back-to-back seasons.M-D seniors Caleb Anderson and Bogdan Monahan also scored goals during the first round win.“The team came out strong, ready to play,” Vandal coach Forrest Stanley said.

Cascade’s Huckaby state-bound

Will Huckaby will represent the Cascade cross country team at state after earning a top 20 finish at the 2A District III XC Championships, held last week in Nampa.The Rambler runner completed the 5,000-meter course at West Park in 19 minutes, 3 seconds to place 16th among a boys varsity field of 77 runners.Huckaby now turns his attention to the Idaho Cross Country Championships, which will take place Saturday at Eagle Island State Park in Eagle.Cascade freshman Roby Kirby also impressed at the district meet, improving his time yet again by crossing the finish line in 21:08.In addition, Ramblers Kyser Ellsworth (23:18) and Lincoln Huckaby (23:22) wrapped up their senior seasons at the Oct.

Ramblers earn postseason return

The Cascade football team is playoff-bound for the first time in a long time.Cole Olson and Stuart Derrick both scored touchdowns but the Ramblers were stumped by Garden Valley, 36-14, on Friday at the Cascade Sports Park to wrap up the regular season.With a 4-3 record, however, the Cascade gridders still earned a spot in the 1A State Playoffs, and will travel to play Deary on Friday.

Vandal soccer wins sportsmanship award

The McCall-Donnelly boys soccer team brought home a fourth place trophy from the 4A State Tournament over the weekend.But the Vandals will need to make more room in the display case after being selected as a 2024 Sportsmanship Winner.The announcement was made by the Idaho High School Activities Association and is posted on the organization’s website, idhsaa.org.“When we started in August I told the team that winning the Academic Award and Sportsmanship Award were as important as trophies for playing excellence,” M-D coach Forrest Stanley said.The Vandals opened the state tournament with a 4-1 victory over Sun Valley Community School, but then lost to eventual state champion Wendell, 1-0, in the semifinal.M-D tackled Teton of Driggs in Saturday’s third place game, settling for fourth place following a 2-1 loss.Stanley said his players won gracefully and met adversity with dignity.
