From artist to artrepreneur

Claire Remsberg’s oil paintings of Idaho landscapes and rivers have hung in galleries across Idaho, but she still found herself wanting to take the next step as an artist.Remsberg, a McCall resident, took part in the “My Artrepreneur Program” in 2020 to better understand how to grow her art business.“It seemed like a great opportunity,” said Remsberg.

Michael Fitzgerald’s long lace wedding dress flapped in the breeze as he eyed blue and red flags alternating down the ski run and prepared to lunge through the start gate.Fitzgerald and 48 other racers participated in this year’s Town Race League, a multi-week alpine race hosted by Little Ski Hill in partnership with the McCall Winter Sports Club.Fitzgerald’s team, the Brundage Patrol, wore various costumes throughout the competition, including Star Wars outfits and a Wookiee onesie, to bring levity to the weekly race outings.“Town league brings people together with the common goal of having fun,” said Cortney Bayuk, program director and events coordinator for Little Ski Hill.

Race for Valley Sheriff brewing – Candidate filing deadline passed last week

Three challengers will face incumbent Valley County Sheriff Kevin Copperi in the May 21 primary election, according to candidate filings received by the county.Copperi will be challenged by Bradley Beaman, a retired law enforcement officer turned real estate agent, and Matthew Bannon, a current Valley County Sheriff’s Office deputy.The winner of the May 21 election will earn the Republican nomination to run for the top office in the Valley County Sheriff’s Office.The candidate who receives the most votes in the primary election will advance to face former Valley County Chief Deputy Jason Speer in the Nov.

McCall appoints interim city manager

Phil Kushlan was appointed as interim McCall city manager on Monday by the McCall City Council.Kushlan, 76, will serve as the city’s top executive until a permanent replacement is hired for former city manager Anette Spickard, whose last day on the job is tomorrow.“I look forward to working closely with the city council, staff, and community members to continue the positive momentum and ensure a smooth transition for the incoming city manager,” Kushlan said.The city expects to begin interviewing permanent replacement candidates in May, McCall Communications Manager Erin Greaves said.Kushlan is not expected to apply for the permanent city manager position, Greaves said.Kushlan previously worked for McCall as a planning consultant and also previously served as the city manager for Bellevue, Washington, and Cottage Grove, Oregon.Kushlan also previously worked as the executive director of Capital City Development Corporation in Boise.Spickard announced her resignation earlier this year after she was hired from a field of 152 candidates to be the new city manager for the City of Sedona, Arizona.She will start with an annual salary of $190,000, or 22% more than the $155,000 she earns as McCall’s city manager.Spickard said the chance to live closer to her daughters and grandchildren were a major factor in her decision to accept the city manager job in Sedona.Spickard took over as city manager in February 2018.

Hasletons charged

Dania Haselton, a former candidate for Mayor of Cascade, was charged with two felony counts for allegedly falsifying records in filing for candidacy in the November 2023 election.Haselton, 37, is accused of perjury and offering a false or forged instrument of record.

40-lot sub. considered

Developers presented plans last week on a 40-lot subdivision proposed on Spink Lane, bordering Lake Fork Creek.The Valley County Planning and Zoning Commission did not make a decision on the proposal at Thursday’s public hearing, but heard a proposal from the applicant, Dave Callister of Boise, and took testimony from the public.The public hearing was continued to April 11 at 6 p.m.

P&Z postpone MacGregor app. again

The Valley County Planning and Zoning Commission tabled the 341-lot Macgregor Townsite application for the third time last week.There was not enough time at the meeting last Thursday to consider all applications on the agenda, so the meeting focused on hearing testimony from those in attendance for multiple applications, Commission Chair Katlin Caldwell said.The MacGregor Townsite application was tabled until April 3 at 2 p.m.
