Valley County budgets $3.9 million for trash updates

The Valley County Transfer Site on Spink Lane will be revamped next year at a cost of about $3.9 million, one of the largest expenses in the county’s 2025 budget, which was adopted on Tuesday. The focus of the project is the “tipping floor” building, where trash is dumped to be hauled to landfills.Last year, an assessment of the building by Great West Engineering of Boise found several structural issues, advising that they must be addressed as soon as possible.Metal supports at the front entrance to the building are close to failing, and must be replaced.

McCall stands by Mile High Marina expansion approval

An approval for a new public boardwalk on Payette Lake and a 90-boat slip expansion of Mile High Marina was upheld last week by the McCall City Council. The June 13 approval was reconsidered by the council following a request filed by Boise lawyer Abigail Germaine on behalf of McCall resident David Gallipoli and other unnamed residents. The request asked the city to overturn the approval and deny the application due a “lack of evidence” proving that the marina expansion will not harm water quality in Payette Lake. The council disagreed, however, and voted to uphold the previous approval, citing data and studies included in the application that suggest the expansion will not harm the lake.“There isn’t legal justification to deny that application,” council member Lyle Nelson said.

McCall likes higher water fees for ‘excessive irrigation’

Water rates in McCall would increase about 6% in 2025 and 2026 under a proposal aired last week to the McCall City Council. The proposed rate increase would add about $4 per month to the average residential bill in each of the next two years, followed by about $3 per month each year thereafter.Overall, average monthly bills would increase from about $71 currently to about $88 in 2029, under the proposal, which the council is expected to consider adopting at a future meeting. The proposed 6% rate increase is 2% more than estimated in May when a $16.5 million bond issue was approved by McCall voters for water system improvements. The rate increases are needed to pay for debt payments tied to the bond issue, which the council pursued instead of seeking steeper rate increases that could have doubled monthly water bills to fund the system upgrades. The new rates would take effect Oct.

Wildfires calmer this week, but warmer weather returns

Warmer weather returns to the region this week that will test firefighters efforts to contain fires in the West Mountain Complex. The warmer weather following a few days of colder temperatures and precipitation gave firefighters the chance to conduct controlled burns around several fires, strengthening containment lines by removing burnable materials. The main focus in the area continues to be the Snag Fire about eight miles east of Cascade, which grew to over 27,000 acres as of Tuesday with 3% containment.Warm Lake Road was opened last week for residents and contractors in the Warm Lake, Yellow Pine and Big Creek areas, but it was closed again temporarily following a windstorm on Tuesday evening.

Payette Lake parcels net state $6 million

AnnMarie and Zeke Johnson were relieved last week when the Waters Edge Event Center in Eagle grew quiet after they placed an opening bid on a Payette Lake cabin site the couple has been leasing from the state. The Boise couple’s bid was the only one placed for the cottage site at 993 Grouse Way, one of two lots that did not receive more than one bid during last Friday’s auction by the Idaho Department of Lands.“We didn’t know what to expect, but there were way more people at the auction than we thought,” Johnson said.
