As a long time resident here, with four generations of Valley County roots, and a supporter of fair and open elections, I was thrilled to learn our legislative District 8 was successfully qualified for the Idahoans for Open Primaries initiative.

Hit and run sentencing

A Boise woman was sentenced last week to up to 15 years in prison for killing a Cascade teacher while under the influence of alcohol in a hit and run incident in August 2022.Natalie Hodson, 39, pleaded guilty on Jan.

Solitude Results

Three McCall skiers traveled to Solitude Mountain Resort earning five podium places in the process.The freeride ski event was part of the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Junior Regional competition at the resort in Solitude, Utah on Saturday and Sunday.Participants were judged on their line choice, control, fluidity, technique, style and energy.

MWSC to host champs

The Intermountain Division Ski Championships will be held this Friday through Sunday at Tamarack Resort.Fifteen ski clubs from Utah, Wyoming and Idaho will compete in a giant slalom, slalom and dual-panel slalom, where skiers race head-to-head on the Tango run off the Summit Express Chair at Tamarack.The race, hosted by the McCall Winter Sports Club, is a culminating race of the season for participating racers ages 8 to 14 years old.For additional information about the 2024 IMD alpine ski championship races, including a race schedule, visit mwsc.club/champs or contact MWSC Executive Director Erik Fisher at erik.mwsc@gmail.com.Several MWSC racers have qualified for the championship race.Mia Andersen was the only skier to qualify for the U10 female category.U10 male skiers include Lane Finley, Frederick Coriell and Connor Krahn.U12 female skiers include Maya Gleason, Hailey Walters, Harper Hurley, Amelia MacKinnon and Hazel Avery.U12 male skiers include Cruz Crocket, Asher Nichols and Aydan Worsfold.

Chris Bodily 4-Way race results

The McCall Winter Sports Club hosted the 79th annual Chris Bodily Memorial 4-Way races over the weekend at the Little Ski Hill and Tamarack Resort.Youth racers participated in slalom, giant slalom and freestyle cross-country races as well as a Gelande jump, where skiers go for maximum distance on alpine skis.

Committee: HB 506 needs balance

A bill that would outlaw many of the City of McCall’s regulations on short-term rentals is not expected to advance for a vote during the current session of the Idaho Legislature.The Idaho House of Representatives Business Committee held a public hearing last week on the bill, known as House Bill 506, before concluding the bill is not ready to advance to the House floor.Committee members instead voted to send the bill back to lawmakers and emphasized the need for the bill to balance personal property rights, community interests and local control.“I would rather see the parties come back with something that strikes more of a balance,” said Rep.

Payette Lake Ice Break-up Contest returns

Chris Wernert hauled a large steel barrel onto ice over Payette Lake on March 6 in a bid to revive a contest that can be traced back more than 70 years.Wernert, executive director of Adaptive Wilderness Sports of McCall (AWeSOMe!), decided to bring back the former Ice Break-Up Barrel Contest, which was last hosted about six years ago by The Star-News.“This winter is very weird but it is a McCall tradition,” Wernert said.

Youth serves Cascade track

Seniors Kallyn Rogers and Trever Sayers will lead the Cascade track and field team as the season takes off today with a trip to New Plymouth to compete at the Fired Up meet.The Ramblers will also enjoy a youth movement of sorts this spring with a talented freshman class eager to make their mark at the high school level.Josie Leslie, Garrett Rogers and Will Huckaby are all coming off successful runs through the junior high ranks.
