M-D stunned by Homedale in semi

Zion Rushton converted a penalty kick to tie the game but the McCall-Donnelly girls soccer team lost to Homedale, 3-1, during a 4A District III Tournament semifinal played Tuesday at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex, ending its season.Down 1-0, Rushton hammered a penalty shot into the left side of the net to help the Vandals pull even, 1-1, headed into halftime.But the Trojans scored twice after the break and M-D could not recover, ending its hopes to earn a berth to the 4A State Tournament, slated for next week in Post Falls.“We had one own-goal in the first half,” Vandal coach Mike Maini said.

Vandals get defensive versus Weiser

Bisbee Henderson provided a spark as the McCall-Donnelly volleyball team got defensive to sweep Weiser, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24, during a Snake River Valley Conference match played last week.The victory helped the Vandals extend a winning streak to 13 games and move to 24-1 overall on the season, including 9-1 in league.M-D blockers had a strong day and Henderson was active on defense, coming up with 17 digs.“She was simply amazing in the back row,” Vandal coach Amber Green said.

Vandals run wild over Payette

McCall-Donnelly running back Colt Value got hit behind the offensive line, shook free of the defender and bolted 55 yards for a touchdown.It was that kind of performance as the Vandals overpowered Payette, 48-6, during a Snake River Valley Conference game played Friday under the lights at the Richard Sabala Athletic Complex.M-D coach BJ Sorensen called it one of his team’s best games this season, with multiple players making their mark.“Our offensive line continues to improve and make things easier for our skill players,” Sorensen said.

MPD ‘patches’ to raise awareness, build community

A pink breast cancer awareness ribbon tattooed on David Ryland’s arm in memory of his late daughter closely resembles pink ribbons placed on two McCall Police Department patrol cars for the month of October.Ryland, who lost his 32-year-old daughter to breast cancer in January, was inspired to share his story with police officers upon seeing the department’s efforts to raise awareness with special patches on patrol cars.“The more it is out there, the more people can be aware of it,” said Ryland, 57, of McCall.

Vandal runners sharp at Inland

McCall-Donnelly cross country teams snared top five finishes while competing at the Inland Empire Championships on Saturday in Lewiston.Charlie Speirs finished fifth overall in the boys varsity race, crossing the finish line at Lewis Clark State College in 15 minutes, 49 seconds.Speirs’ teammate, Jacob Mascheroni, came in two spots later, placing seventh, with a time of 16:04.M-D coach McCall Keller said Speirs provided a highlight with his sub-16 minute time, but both runners excelled.“He and Jacob went out a bit too slow but worked their way up the field and had a strong finish,” Keller said.Josie Leslie was the first runner in for the M-D girls, completing the 5,000-meter varsity course in 19:44 to finish sixth overall out of 69 runners.Lauren Nelson (22nd) and Nina Giddings (27th) gave the Vandals three girls inside the top 30.Keelee Burns and Jessica Hammari also competed for M-D, helping the team to a fifth place finish in team standings.The Vandal boys were able to nab a share of third place as a team.Bishop Kelly, a 5A school based in Boise, won the overall boys title while Enterprise (Oregon) finished second.

Ramblers run past Mustangs

The passing game struggled as the Cascade football team tackled Horseshoe Bend on Friday, but Rambler rushers made sure that did not matter.Running back Cole Olson sprang for 195 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and the Cascade gridders brought home a Long Pin Conference victory, knocking off the Mustangs, 36-14, under the lights at Horseshoe Bend High School.Stuart Derrick also chipped in 138 yards and two scores on 12 totes on a day the senior signal caller struggled to connect with his receivers.The Ramblers moved to 5-1 with the Long Pin win.
