Kayla Boring-Bartlett scored nine aces as the Cascade volleyball team swept Greenleaf Friends Academy in three sets, 25-17, 25-11, 25-14 during a Long Pin Conference game last week. The Ramblers landed 21 aces overall after a three-hour trip to the town of Greenleaf, which is located just outside Caldwell.Ceder Saxton also looked sharp from the service line, notching four aces to go along with three kills and two digs.Cascade netters collected 19 kills in all, with Reata Atnip leading the way with three kills.Boring-Bartlett also chipped in six assists as the Ramblers dispatched the Grizzlies, who joined the 1A Long Pin this fall, for a second time this season.“The girls did a great job working together and trusting each other on the court,” Cascade coach Alison Haupt said. The Ramblers also stole a set from Tri-Valley of Cambridge on Monday, but fell short of a match.
Quarterback Maddox Arnold threw two touchdowns and ran for another but the McCall-Donnelly football team had an undefeated start to the season snapped by Weiser, 27-21, during a Snake River Valley Conference opener on Friday. The Vandals got 105 scrimmage yards from junior Colt Value, who rushed for 80 yards on 13 carries and sprang for a touchdown catch on one of two receptions for 25 yards. On defense, Mikey Wyman and Ethan Roberts intercepted passes for M-D while Finn Moon sacked the quarterback. It seemed like enough for the Vandals, who entered the conference tilt unbeaten, 4-0.
Zoe Spangenberg scored two more goals and the McCall-Donnelly girls soccer team kicked the final two weeks of the regular season off by rolling past Emmett, 4-0, on the road. The Vandal midfield accounted for all four scores during Monday’s Snake River Valley Conference game, with Lily Mihlfeith and Finley Denning also finding the net as the McCall squad continued an undefeated streak that started on opening day.“It was a good balance of scoring,” M-D coach Mike Maini said.It is not the first time Maini has leaned on his midfield, which includes regulars Spangenberg, Mihlfieth, Maddie Lathrop and Sophie Dickinson. The veteran coach said the group works extremely hard, and has players like Denning as quality depth coming off the bench.“They are performing quite well,” Maini said. The Vandals also got a clean sheet on the defensive end, but were able to quash many of the Grizzlies opportunities before they started.Starting goalkeeper Emily Hyatt was credited with the shutout. With the win, the Vandals moved to 10-0-1 on the season, the draw coming against Fruitland, which shares an identical 8-0-1 record in conference play.Maini said the strong showing this season is a testament to team defense.“It’s all about that defense,” Maini said.
