Freshman Willa Cromwell placed first in the junior varsity race with sixth grader Svea Eitel also topping the podium as the McCall Area Composite Mountain Bike team took to the race course in their second race of the season.There were 664 total mountain bike racers at the race, held at Magic Mountain near Kimberly on Saturday.The McCall team notched 17 podium finishes, including a long-anticipated fifth place finish from Freshman Nelson Witte.“Nelson has finished 6th a number of times last year, but never made it onto the podium,” said Team Director Dean Cromwell.“He was super excited about it and we were too,” Cromwell said.Freshman girls Rebecca Nemec, Casey Haynes and Teya Martinez finished in an impressive sweep of second, third and fourth.Course conditions at Magic Mountain were affected by the area’s lack of rain this summer.“It was definitely dusty and the course was super loose.

A former assistant coach will take the reins of the Cascade volleyball program this fall, starting with a tournament this weekend in New Plymouth.Alison Haupt, 34, was on the Rambler staff the last few seasons and will replace former head coach Tessa Redmon, who departed after three years at the helm.Haupt played volleyball through high school while growing up on the central coast of California.She fell in love with the sport, and has spent the last five years as an assistant coach, including two seasons guiding the Cascade junior varsity.Now it is her turn.
