Athletes tackle Homedale, New Plymouth meets

Vandal athletes collected eight golds as the McCall-Donnelly boys track and field snared another overall team win while competing at the Amy Christofferson Invitational on Friday in Homedale.George Speirs, Matthew Daniels, Van Vinson, Jacob Mascheroni, Seth Weller and Elise Johnson all won individual events at the multi-class meet, which featured athletes from 15 schools, including most of the Snake River Valley Conference.Speirs was able to grab wins in the 800- and 1,600-meter races, then collected a third gold in the boys sprint medley relay, where he teamed up with fellow seniors Caleb Beaman, Daniels and Vinson to top the field with a time of 3 minutes, 52.36 seconds.Daniels picked up an individual victory in the 400 while Mascheroni, a freshman, represented the M-D boys in the 3,200 and earned his first individual victory this season.Vinson also nabbed another win in the pole vault, topping 14 feet, while Seth Weller earned a repeat victory in the javelin with a personal best throw of 136 feet, 3.5 inches.

M-D rally falls short

The McCall-Donnelly softball team staged an epic rally in extra innings last week versus Weiser, but came up a run short, 8-7, during a Snake River Valley Conference game played at the M-D softball field.Angie Dauphinais collected two hits to lead the Vandals while Ceder Saxton, Makenzie Pedrow Monique Brewer and Payton Woolcott also each put the ball in play and reached base.Saxton and Bella Potts each notched a pair of RBI while Pedrow also drove in a run.Senior pitcher Angie Dauphinais held it down for all eight innings, striking out three while allowing 10 hits.“The Weiser game did not end like we wanted,” M-D coach Jeff Walker said.

Rambler teammates share second

Cole Olson and Tyler Thurston both earned a share of second place as the Cascade golf team competed at a tournament in Caldwell last week.The Rambler teammates both shot a 43 over nine holes at TimberStone Golf Course, finishing behind medalist Cole Fay of Compass Charter, who led the individual boys with a 39.The effort, combined with scores from Lincoln Huckaby (63) and Kysar Ellsworth (66), helped the Cascade boys place third overall as team.Olson was able to draw with Fay the day prior, as both golfers shot a three-over-par 39 at Nampa’s Ridgecrest Golf Course to share second place behind medalist Ryan Gonzales of Nampa Christian.The back-to-back outings gave Olson a second straight runner-up finish in as many days.Meanwhile, Thurston finished with a 48 on the Nampa links while Hayden Hull shot a 54, Ellsworth a 59 and Huckaby a 62.The Rambler girls joined the boys at Ridgestone, which took place April 23, and were led by Viktoria Stepanishena’s 66.

Vandals let early lead slip

Seniors Owen Naugle and John Hatfield teamed up for some double trouble as the McCall-Donnelly baseball team blitzed Weiser in the first inning during a Snake River Valley Conference tilt played last week in McCall.Or was it a triple double, with Cole Naugle providing a third extra base hit on a day the sophomore led the Vandals by going 3-for-4 from the plate.Either way, M-D could not hold on against the rival Wolverines, falling 9-5 despite a quick start that featured key hits from all three players.Seth Julian and Gavon Keegan also delivered hits while Owen Naugle finished with two.

Watershed coalition urges collaboration

The need for broad collaboration was stressed by attendees at the first public workshop held by the North Fork Payette River Watershed Coalition last week in Donnelly.The meeting convened government officials from McCall, Donnelly, Cascade, and Valley County, representatives from state regulatory agencies, ranchers, farmers, and others dependent on the North Fork Payette River.“We need to work together and not say ‘you, you, you,’” Cascade Mayor Judy Nissula said.
