Speirs, Vandals shine on big stage

Vandal runner George Speirs proved it on another big stage, this time capturing gold over several runners from larger schools as the McCall-Donnelly track and field team competed at the Patriot Invitational, held Saturday in Eagle.The Vandal senior won the 3,200-meters with a time of 9 minutes, 29.04 seconds, shattering his own school record yet again, this time by seven seconds (9:36.77).Runners and coaches from 4A and 5A schools took notice.“That was fun,” M-D coach Freddy Hernandez said.

A trio of Vandals locked in over nine holes at Riverbend Golf Course on Monday, helping the McCall-Donnelly boys golf team snare second place overall.Keaton Swift shot a team-leading 39 as Vandal golfers tackled the Homedale links amid sunny skies.

Cascade golfers finish fifth

The Cascade boys golf team teed off for another tournament last week, this time seizing a fifth place finish at Lakeview Golf Club in Meridian.Cole Olson shot the top round for the Ramblers, submitting a 45 over nine holes of action, while Tyler Thurston celebrated a return to the lineup with a 51.Hayden Hull and Kysar Ellsworth each shot a 53 while navigating the Lakeview links, with the latter golfer’s round a personal-best in competition.“Way to go, Kysar” Cascade coach Kerie Kushlan said.Lincoln Huckaby rounded out the Rambler five with a 56, giving the team a combined score of 256.Malayna Zender submitted the top score for the Cascade girls, shooting a 66.Kushlan said Zender continues to improve with every tournament.Claire Pierce also made it out for her first competitive golf this spring, and came away with a score of 69.

Rogers, Leslie perform in Parma

Rambler athletes turned heads as the Cascade track and field team braved the cold to compete at a multi-class meet in Parma on Friday.Senior Kallyn Rogers ran season-best times in her signature events, the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, placing second in the latter to lead Rambler athletes at a gathering that featured 16 schools from the 1A, 2A and 3A classifications.Rogers also delivered a fourth place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.09 seconds.

Ramblers hand out honors for hoops

The Cascade boys basketball team recently recognized a few of its players with end-of-season awards following a sterling winter campaign.Tyler Thurston, Samuel Huckaby, Cole Olson and Grant Whipple all received honors after helping the Ramblers to a 19-7 record and a third place trophy at the 1AD2 state tournament.Thurston, twice dubbed the Long Pin Conference’s top player, earned Most Valuable Player honors after averaging nearly 18 points, five rebounds and five assists per outing.

McCall city manager pay snuffing interest

The expected pay range for a new city manager for the City of McCall is too low and causing applicants to lose interest, the McCall City Council was told last week.Council members signed off on a change to the city’s job posting that will remove an expected hiring pay range of $132,800 to $140,400.“Unanimously, everyone I’ve talked to said ‘I’m not applying for that,’” Interim City Manager Phil Kushlan said.
