Avalanche rescue training park opens at Francis Wallace

Dayton Young carefully scanned a blanket of snow last weekend with a small handheld device to search for a similar device buried somewhere near the Francis Wallace Parking Lot north of McCall.Young, 43, of Boise, was among many snowmobilers who tested out a new avalanche transceiver training park at the popular snowmobile trailhead on Warren Wagon Road last Saturday at an event hosted by the McCall Area Snowmobilers Club. The training park was created by the nonprofit Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center (FPAC) group and the snowmobile club using a $5,000 grant from the City of McCall’s tourism local-option tax on motels and short-term rentals.“The new location will allow motorized users the ability to hone their skills before heading out for the day,” said Brian Peters, a McCall resident who volunteers for the friends group.“It will also allow for motorized users to better understand how the running motors can affect the performance of their avalanche transceivers,” said Peters, 43.Avalanche transceivers, also known as beacons, are worn by snowmobilers and backcountry skiers to increase the chances of rescue if buried in an avalanche. The devices transmit a signal that can be located by other people equipped with a transceiver. There has been a beacon training park at Little Ski Hill for 4 years, but members of FPAC realized that not many snowmobilers were using the park, Peters said. The Francis Wallace beacon park is free to use and has eight waterproof transmit boxes buried at various depths, allowing snowmobilers to practice multiple rescue scenarios.John McClain, President of the McCall Area Snowmobilers, hopes the beacon park at Francis Wallace will help save lives through education and practice.“It is extremely important that everyone knows how to use their beacons and to practice no matter what type of user,” McClain said. The annual fun run hosted last weekend by the snowmobile club marked the grand opening of the new transceiver park. The fun run began at the Francis Wallace lot and went 25 miles north to Secesh.
