Snowshoe golf marks 25th year at Winter Carnival

Ramon Alford did not like the expected silence and firm rules of regular golf, so in the winter of 1999 he strapped on a pair of snowshoes and set up a golf course in his backyard.With the help of Robert Lyons, the 1999 McCall Winter Carnival director, Alford turned snowshoe golf into the annual carnival event enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.Alford used his wooden snowshoes to stomp down the greens and chose an assortment of items as golf tees.

Valley County man gets 15 years for child pornography

A 31-year-old Valley County man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for two counts of sexual exploitation of a child for possessing child pornography.Nicholas Gatchell will be eligible for parole after a minimum of one year in confinement and will be required to register as a sex offender upon release, the Valley County Sheriff’s Office said.Gatchell’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation between the Idaho Attorney General’s Idaho Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force and the Valley County Sheriff’s Office.“It is important for folks to know that it is nearly impossible for possession of this material to go undetected by law enforcement,” said Valley County Sheriff, Kevin Copperi.“When local law enforcement receives tips or leads from ICAC regarding the possession or distribution of this material, we are committed to tracking down the perpetrators and holding them accountable for perpetuating this horrific crime against innocent children,” he said.Gatchell pled guilty on Dec.

Applications are open for the Annual PEO Scholarship for young women who are seniors in high school with a 3.0 or higher grade-point average.Scholarships are for continued higher education beyond high school.Students may pick up and return applications at McCall-Donnelly, Heartland, New Meadows or Cascade high schools counseling offices.Home school students may also apply but must pick up applications from and return them to one of the local high school’s counseling offices.The application deadline for the scholarships is Friday, April 26.PEO stands for Philanthropic Education Organization.

M-D JV wins tournament title

Sam Scott scored 19 points and Mike Wyman delivered a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the McCall-Donnelly boys basketball junior varsity “A” team knocked off Homedale, 51-33, to win its end-of-season tournament last week.Colby Myers added eight points and 12 rebounds as the Vandals wrapped up a banner year with a 20-1 record, which included a 10-0 run through Snake River Valley Conference opponents to win the regular season title.
