Bringing biathlon back

The McCall Nordic and Biathlon Ski Club’s annual Bring Back Biathlon event on Saturday included about 40 skiers competing for time and shooting accuracy on the trails at Jug Mountain Ranch.Biathlon racing combines timed Nordic racing with target shooting.Saturday’s race included two laps on a short course for a total distance of about five kilometers.

Vandals deliver district crown

Luke Scott’s 4-point play provided the exclamation point as the McCall-Donnelly boys basketball team slammed the door on a feisty Homedale team, 51-35, last week at the M-D gym to seize a 3A District III championship.Scott, who injured his ankle during a semifinal win over Fruitland, drained a 3-pointer, was fouled and hit the ensuing free throw.

Giant snowman, moose win top sculpture honors

Luna Garff and Jeremy Lowe’s giant snowman sculpture in front of Beside the Mill won first place prize for the amateur category during last weekend’s McCall Winter Carnival.The sculpture towers at more than 13 feet tall and shows a skier’s pants, boots and skis hanging out of the giant snowman’s mouth.The giant snowman is made mostly of snow, but also includes an interior wood support to keep the sculpture upright.The skier in the snowman’s mouth is made of snow and is wearing pants donated by local stores and skis donated by Josh Crestner of Idaho Ski Furniture.The sculpture was a subtle jab at the lack of snow this winter.

HB 506 takes aim at McCall’s STR law

A bill that would require all short-term rentals in Idaho to be regulated the same as other homes is currently pending before the Idaho Legislature.The bill, known as House Bill 506, would outlaw many of the regulations in place for hundreds of short-term rentals currently operating in McCall.That includes annual fire safety inspections and requiring short-term rentals with five or more bedrooms to obtain a conditional use permit to be able to operate.The bill was introduced earlier this month in the Idaho House of Representatives by Rep.

McCall water bond election set

McCall voters will be asked to approve a $16.5 million bond issue in the May 21 primary election after action taken last week by the McCall City Council.McCall Mayor Bob Giles and council members Colby Nielsen, Mike Maciaszek, Julie Thrower and Lyle Nelson voted unanimously last Thursday to authorize the bond election for the upcoming May election.If approved, the bond would allow the city to borrow up to $16.5 million to pay for improvements to the drinking water system that serves McCall.Approval will require 50% of voters to be in favor of the proposal, plus one more voter for a simple majority.The bond money would be repaid over 20 years through fees added to monthly bills paid by 5,900 city water accounts.
