Vandal JV teams shine at districts

The McCall-Donnelly girls basketball junior varsity “A” team defeated Fruitland, 40-19, last week at the M-D gym to win its district tournament last week.The victory capped a 19-3 season for the Vandals, who topped Weiser, 37-22, in the semifinal two days earlier to advance to the title game.M-D coach Freddy Hernandez said his group shined on defense throughout the season, forcing turnovers that often led to points on the other end.

Rambler boys wrap regular season with route

Tyler Thurston’s 15 points led three Ramblers in double figures as the Cascade boys basketball team wrapped up the regular season schedule on Monday at Novotny Gym with a 62-46 victory over Tri-Valley of Cambridge.Samuel Huckaby added 14 points and Finn Wilkins chipped in 10 points, including eight as the Ramblers took control early with a 24-7 opening quarter.The Long Pin Conference win also helped the Ramblers secure a share of the regular season championship at 9-1, a record matched by Garden Valley.

Survive and advance: Ramblers girls pull through in fourth

Rambler coach Steve Yamamoto joked his hair may have gotten grayer after the Cascade girls basketball team endured a rough night shooting Tuesday to eke out a 23-18 victory over Horseshoe Bend during a 1AD2 District III Tournament single elimination game.Kallyn Rogers scored 12 points, including a couple of clutch free throws down the stretch, as the Ramblers survived and advanced.Cascade will play Salmon River today in Council, with another chance to keep its season alive.“We had a few minor mistakes but all in all it was a W,” Yamamoto said.

Charged up – May Hardware EV chargers go online

Four electric vehicle chargers opened last week in the parking lot behind May Hardware, marking the first bank of public chargers available in McCall.The chargers are available at a first come, first served basis and can charge all current models of electric vehicles, said May Hardware co-owner Rick Fereday.The installation wasn’t a moneymaking venture, but something that the store installed because the technology is more environmentally friendly and a sign of things to come, Fereday said.“It’s just a technology we believe in,” he said.

Donnelly man arrested on first degree murder charges

A Donnelly man suspected of shooting and killing another Donnelly man was arrested on Monday by the Valley County Sheriff’s Office.Chuckaya “Joe” Mount, 48, has been charged with first degree murder for the shooting of Keith Cunningham, 65, at a home where both resided at 46 Loomis Lane about two miles south of Donnelly.Shots were fired at the home shortly after 1 p.m.
