Yeet, Pinetop use extra innings in 26-22 slugfest

(Here is a rundown of recent games played in the McCall Recreation Department’s competitive and recreational softball leagues.)

COMPETITIVE GAME OF THE WEEK

A battle between titans took place last week as team Yeet took on the Pinetop Builders in a barn burner from the beginning. Both teams jumped out swinging in the first inning and never stopped all game.

Yeet, the superior aggressor, put Pinetop in a headlock early on, slowly draining the life out of them until Randy from Pinetop said good-bye Mr. Baseball and blasted a homer in the third to bring the game back in close.

Equally matched, both teams continued their offensive rallies through all seven with Yeet tying up the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Flowing into an extra inning, Pinetops Ryan York continued his dominance at the plate with impeccable placement putting Pinetop ahead by six. Yeet down but not out gave it all they could scoring two more runs, but eventually fell to Pinetop in the eighth with a score of Pinetop 26, Yeet 22.

RECREATIONAL GAME OF THE WEEK

It came down to defense last week as the Scrubs took on Triple Sow Cow for their season-ending game.

Triple Sow Cow, led by Karla Hatfield’s impeccable glove in left field, slowed down the Scrubs last Thursday, but could not stop the speed of the Scrubs’ Abby Andrew and the rest of her team.

Triple Sow Cow kept the Scrubs at bay through the fifth inning with a trick tag from short stop Dave Henderson resulting in a double play to finish the inning.

But the Scrubs’ bats caught fire in the sixth and seventh innings, burying Triple Sow Cow with a score of Scrubs 13, Triple Sow Cow 8.

Garden Column: Bag the veggie garden, grow cutting flowers

I tried growing a rock garden, but gave up when three of them died.

The harvest is on and it’s not just limited to vegetables. To a flower lover, harvesting a cutting garden is as enriching as tomatos are to vegi-addicts. Any sunny spot of 20 square feet or more can be turned into a flowers-for-harvest operation.

Cutting gardens cry to be in or among vegetable beds because you grow flowers for cutting very much the same way you grow vegetables. Different flowers have different fertilizer needs and require applications at different times. Like vegetable gardens, most cutting gardens are linear, with flowers grown in blocks.

Also like vegetable gardens, cutting flower beds are laid out the same way. An oblong bed that lies east-west is best for maximum sun. Plants are arranged according to the bed’s southern exposure, with the shortest being the furthest south and the tallest the furthest north so that taller plants do not shade shorter ones.

Of course, you can “landscape” a cutting garden just as many gardeners arrange their vegetable gardens for both beauty and function. Just be aware that such arrangements are twice the work. Plants grown for performance require specialized treatments. When you grow plants in blocks, you tend to those special needs in one place. When you landscape a vegetable or flower garden, you tend to those needs in several different places.

When planning cutting garden, make sure that you factor in permanent locations for perennials that won’t limit your flexibility in choosing annuals and in cultivating. If you grow scallions or aspargus in your vegetable garden, you know the importance of site selection.

There are simply too many great flowers for cutting to even begin to list them here. Both the McCall and Cascade public libraries, thanks to the McCall Farmer’s Market and the Long Valley Garden Club, have excellent references available. If you do wish to landscape the bed, cut down on the work involved by choosing flowers with similar cultivation needs. If you want to grow specific types, you’ll probably be happier with the block method. Extend your enjoyment of the cutting garden by growing some varieties for drying.

When you cut your flowers, do it early in the morning before the plant’s vascular system begins transpiring moisture. Use sharp shears. The tall, metal flower buckets you see in flower shops and greenhouses have a purpose. Florists take the buckets with them when they harvest so that the flowers can be placed instantly in water. You will be well advised to do the same.

Indoors, strip the lower leaves from the flower stem to keep the water from clouding with bacteria and use a sharp knife to cut the stems once more on a diagonal under water before arranging them in the vase. Adding floral preservative will provide nutrients and inhibit bacteria.

If commercial preservative isn’t handy, a tablespoon of vodka will have almost the same benefit. Or mix 1/3 cup of regular lemon-lime soda (not diet) and a dash of bleach. The sugar in the soda feeds the flowers and the lemon and bleach keep bacteria at bay.

Change the water every couple days, adding preservative and keep your bouquet out of direct sun or hot drafts. If your cutting garden yields more than you can use, brighten a friend’s day. A gift of flowers touches the heart like very little else. Thousands of florists can’t be wrong.
